Why your dealership's marketing hire keeps leaving — and what to do instead

LaLista team2 min read

Many dealer principals who have hired a marketing coordinator tell a version of the same story. They find someone good. Everyone is excited for a quarter. The new hire produces posts, a content calendar, maybe a newsletter. Six months in, the numbers aren't obviously better, and the person is drowning in ad manager tabs, photo requests and "can you get this out by Friday". Twelve months in, they have left, and the principal starts hiring again.

Three jobs in one chair

The problem is structural, not personal. A single marketer at a dealership is asked to do three jobs at once:

  • the strategist, who decides what to promote and why,
  • the producer, who makes the pictures and the texts,
  • the operator, who runs the paid ads day to day.

At a consumer brand these are three different roles. At a dealership they are one chair.

Work that doesn't add up

Worse, most of the work doesn't build on itself. Every new car means a new ad. Every sold car means an ad that has to come down before someone calls about it. Every price change means an edit. The marketer ends up as an inventory translator, turning yesterday's stock list into today's ads, and that part of the job starts from zero every Monday.

Three honest options

Option A: hire an agency. An agency buys you capacity. You still need someone at the dealership to brief them, and you pay a monthly fee plus, in most setups, the ad budget on top. The results can be real; so is the dependency.

Option B: hire a team, not a person. A marketing manager, a paid social specialist and a freelance creative. That can work for a group with several locations that can share the team. It rarely works for a single-location dealer.

Option C: let software do the operator job. The strategy stays at the dealership: it's your market, your customers and your mix of cars. The ads for each car are built from the listing. The operator work — creating, updating and removing ads as the stock moves — is done by a platform.

Where LaLista fits

LaLista is Option C for car dealers in Germany and Sweden. It reads the cars you already list online, turns each one into an ad on Facebook and Instagram, and brings the ads in line with your stock every night, so sold cars are removed overnight. The ads are included in one monthly price, and results are in a dashboard: per car, how many people saw it and how many clicked through.

If you already have a marketer, this takes the operator job off their desk. What is left is the work they were hired for: local partnerships, your own content, the showroom events, the customers.

Before you hire again

The point of this post isn't "buy LaLista". It's to understand the structural problem before you hire your next coordinator. If you do hire, decide which of the three jobs you are hiring for, and make sure the other two are covered some other way. Otherwise you will be writing the same job ad again next year.
